These are selections from Whitfield Lovell’s ”Kin” series. Lovell is a NY born artist and MacArthur Genius award winner (2007), known for his thought-provoking images of African Americans from the 19th to early 20th centuries. View more of Lovell’s work in the archive.

Whitfield Lovell: Deep River opens at the Hunter Museum of American Art May 17-October 3, 2013. The exhibition will feature works from the last five years, including his intricate charcoal drawings on vintage wood juxtaposed with found objects, mixed media drawings from his ongoing “Kin” series, and a site-specific installation created by Lovell during his spring 2013 residency at the Museum, which will explore ideas of memory, identity, freedom and passage. There will be an artist talk at the museum on May 17th at 6pm.

Except we never see it-so it is terrifying and uncomfortable when it happens.
(Mostly because people would laugh or be unkind)

I own a sex shop. Once a woman bled on our chair during an interview. She was horrified and felt ashamed because it was in some way unprofessional. We weren’t bothered. We said ‘what better place to work on being ok with your body than at a feminist sex shop?’
Bleeding is normal and dealing with it is one of the most pervasive ways women are complicit in their silence.

Some men bleed too. How would you react to that? For many men who are Trans the act of bleeding is a security threat.

Fuck off with your lolz.

The B.Steady Project: Brought to you by B.Qullective

Our idea to create The B.Steady Project started the way most great ideas come about: with good food, good music, and best friends. We (Chey, Clara, Jai, and Lane, pictured below) were hanging out one day and listening to one of our favorite queer brown musicians, B.Steady, who is a Washington D.C. based artist and YouTube sensation. Often sharing space together as brown queer artists ourselves, our conversations surround the salient issues that effect our communities. So it wasn’t out of the ordinary when we thought: what if we brought B.Steady to perform at the Twin Cities pride festival? And from there is where this project began. From there the four of us began meeting regularly to network, organize all of the logistics of our fundraiser, and figure out how to get folks to donate.
