Some have said that he only spoke these words to get re-elected. I think that’s stupid and moronic. Same-sex marriage is an issue that literally DIVIDES the country. Those who support it and those who are against it (in polls) show an almost even split—though luckily the favor is SLIGHTLY with the supporters.
The fact that President Obama has said this will most likely deter some of his support base and perhaps he will even lose some of the voters he had before. This is more than a statement “to get votes”. This is a statement that will hopefully begin to bridge the gap between the supporters and the “against”-ers.
Maybe one day we can look back on these words and remember them as the start of something better. For everyone.
I like it no matter why he said it- I just am longing for some muscle behind it. Hoping that we get to see this become from a should- to a will be able to marry. Like now. Or if not now then very soon.
