Still humming and throbbing after Femmes Go Dirty South

Sunday night I had the crazy pleasure of reading with a rock star line up of fierce, femme, dirty word slingers at The Center for Sex and Culture. I got to see and hear guest star, Alysia Angel- who came directly from the South, whose characters are so well drawn and powerful they are still wandering around in my heaYou can see her in person and hear her get bawdy tonight at Bawdy Story Tellers with a hot line up- including Mollena Williams for a night of stories in the hot theme of Whose Your Daddy!
The other rock stars included widely anthologized local writer and writing workshop facilitator, Jen Cross who was also an amazing MC in sexy black heels and glitter. Virgie Tovar read a blazing hot, intimate and funny piece that had the audience whopping, laughing and whistling throughout. We also got to hear local Blogger, Organizer and hot story teller Blyth Barnow read two pieces- one of them on class that was challenging and brave. The amazing Daphne Gottlieb, winner of The Firecracker and Audre Lourde awards read a piece that left my church pew swearing and knocked on our asses. We got to hear a rich lyrical story with little bits of music from Nomy Lamm who will be performing on May 11 at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts. Tori Adams made us sweat a little with her hot number and left us wanting more. Allison Stilly entertained us with a piece that made us think and laugh. The fabulous Carol Queen graced us with a delicious hot story too.
I found out I was up first and in between the terror and flipping through the words I would read I was watching the performers arrive and then the audience. It was a packed house, full of hot, enthusiastic and receptive queer folks. It was wonderful to see how people were decked out in finery, particularly the femmes, performers and audience alike. It was a room full of color and this wild energy I wish I could plug into every night.

The Center for Sex and Culture is the best venue I’ve ever read in. I love the new location, it’s intimate but still has enough room to pack a crowd. And where else can you look at sexy art, see antique vibrators, sit on a church pew and listen to hot words read by beautiful women while surrounded floor to ceiling by books. During intermission a number of first timers to the new location commented on how hot it was to be surrounded by books- and sexy books at that!
The night was a riot of hot, strong amazing words by such mind blowing femme writers I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to be there to hear them and I will never forget how honored I was to read with them. Check out their links for more information on what is going on for them and check out this flickr set to find more pictures of this wonderful night. There was talk that perhaps there might be a Femmes Go Dirty South 2- hope to see you there!
